Strawberry Matcha History

Matcha has a history spanning more than 800 years, with roots in China and a lasting tradition in Japan. During the Tang Dynasty, powdered tea became an important part of Chinese tea culture before the practice gradually declined in China. In the 12th century, the Japanese Buddhist monk Eisai brought powdered tea and tea-growing knowledge from China to Japan. Matcha became closely associated with Zen Buddhism, where preparing and drinking tea was valued as a practice of mindfulness and discipline.

Over the centuries, matcha became an essential part of Japanese tea culture and the Japanese tea ceremony, known as Chanoyu. The tea is made by grinding specially cultivated green tea leaves into a fine powder, which is then whisked directly into water rather than steeped and discarded. Today, matcha is enjoyed around the world for its vibrant colour, smooth texture, distinctive green tea flavour, and deep connection to Japanese tea tradition.
