A jewel among Japanese teas, Gyokuro unfolds a rich, deep umami, softened by natural sweetness and silky vegetal notes, through to a clean, refreshing finish. Its complexity invites you to slow down: this is a green tea for mindful tasting, ideally brewed with cooler water to preserve its delicacy. Its secret lies in shading: the tea plants are covered for several weeks before harvest, a technique developed in the nineteenth century in the Uji region near Kyoto, which concentrates the flavours and gives the tea its incomparable sweetness. Its name means jade dew. Made solely from carefully selected young leaves, Gyokuro is hand-packed in Montreal.

Gyokuro, Japanese Green Tea History

Gyokuro tea has a long and esteemed history in Japan, dating back to the 19th century. The tea was first developed in the Uji region of Kyoto, a renowned area for high-quality green teas. Gyokuro, meaning "jade dew," is distinguished by its unique growing process, where the tea plants are shaded for several weeks before harvest. This technique, known as shading, helps increase the concentration of amino acids in the leaves, particularly theanine, which gives the tea its signature umami flavor. Initially, Gyokuro was a rare and expensive tea, enjoyed primarily by the Japanese aristocracy and tea connoisseurs. Today, it is still considered one of the finest and most luxurious Japanese green teas, celebrated for its complex, delicate taste and rich history.
